Prefer the short answer? [Why might AI search mention a competitor but not my business?](<https://wavehello.ai/faq/search-visibility#ai-search-mentions>)

An AI-search answer may mention a competitor because the question, available sources, or retrieved information fit that business better in that moment. One omission does not identify the cause. Review the actual answer and its sources, then check whether your own business is clearly described and discoverable for the same need.

## Save the question and answer before interpreting it

Record the exact question, search product, date, location context, and any follow-up questions. Save the answer and the links it shows. Different prompts can ask for different kinds of businesses, and a later result may change. Without the original context, a comparison can become a vague story about visibility rather than a reproducible observation.

Distinguish being named in an answer from having a page cited. A system might mention a company while linking to another publisher, or cite a useful article without recommending its author as a provider. Decide which outcome matters to your business before comparing yourself with another company.

## Look at what the cited pages actually contribute

Open the sources and ask what made them relevant to the question. Do they explain a specific service, compare options, document an example, or provide current business details? Treat those as clues about the information available to the answer, not proof that copying the layout or wording will produce the same placement.

Look for gaps you can honestly fill. Perhaps your service is only named in a menu, an important page is hard to reach, or your examples do not explain the customer's situation. A useful response adds information you can support. It does not manufacture endorsements or imitate another company's claims.

 **Illustrative example**

A question asks for providers that handle a particular type of project. A competitor has a clear page about that project type; your site only says you offer tailored solutions. Explaining your actual experience may close an information gap, but it does not prove why the earlier answer omitted you.

## Check ordinary discovery before buying an AI-specific fix

For Google's generative search features, Google says established SEO foundations still apply. Its guidance does not require special AI files or a separate style of writing. Check access, indexability, useful page content, and real internal links before assuming a new acronym or markup package is the missing ingredient.

Other search products have their own access policies and behavior, so do not generalize one provider's rules to all AI systems. If the concern is a specific product, review that provider's current documentation. Allowing a crawler is an access decision, not a promise that the business will be recommended.

## Publish answers that deserve to be read

Choose questions where the business can contribute something useful: an explanation of tradeoffs, an original example, a decision checklist, or a documented project. Put the direct answer near the beginning, then give enough context to make it reliable. Write for the customer who has to make the decision.

Separate experience, opinion, and third-party facts. Link to your own detailed guides for depth and to external primary sources for the claims they support. A set of pages citing one another is not independent proof. The content needs to stand on its usefulness even if no AI system ever cites it.

## Treat monitoring as observation, not a ranking guarantee

Review a small, meaningful set of questions over time and keep the conditions visible. Combine those observations with available search reporting, referral visits, and relevant inquiries. Do not turn one favorable screenshot into a broad claim about market share or assume every mention produces a customer.

The practical goal is to make the business easier to understand and verify across its discovery paths. If a change improves a real information gap, it can be valuable without guaranteeing a citation. Keep the conclusion open when the evidence does not distinguish content quality, access, competition, and normal answer variation.
