# Should You Change Marketing Companies or Fix the Tracking First?

Weak results can come from poor ads, broken tracking, or both. Review the work and records before you fix the tracking or change companies.

A decision aid, not a verdict

Check the work.
Check the records.

| Ad work | Records traceable | Records have gaps |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Sound | Keep and improve | Repair the records |
| Weak | Request correction; consider a change | Protect access; address both |

Missing records neither excuse poor work nor prove it.

Weak results do not always mean your marketing company is doing poor work. A good-looking report does not prove the work is good, either. First, check the work and the records as two separate things.

**Measurement** means the way you track what happened after an ad. A short, fair review can show whether the ads need work, the tracking needs work, or both need work.

## Ask two different questions

1. **Are the ads being managed well?** Check the audience, search terms, budget, ads, pages, tests, and changes.
2. **Can the business result be seen?** Check whether leads can be followed to good fits, bookings, sales, and payments.

Do not use missing sales records to excuse poor ad work. Do not call the ads poor only because the sales records are missing. Each question needs its own proof.

## Decide what proof you need

A conversion is an action the ad tool is set to count. Name the deeper business result you need before opening a report. For example:

- Real leads in the right service area
- Leads that fit the service
- Booked jobs or sales
- Paid revenue from those jobs

Then collect the smallest useful set of records:

- Ad account access and change history
- The meaning of every counted conversion
- Website forms, calls, and landing pages
- Lead status, bookings, sales, and payments when available
- The agreed work, budget, goals, and report dates

A report should not be judged against a result that no tool was set up to record.

## Run the review in a clear order

1. **Confirm access.** Make sure the business can see the real ad account, tracking, bills, and pages.
2. **Define the numbers.** Write down what a click, call, form, lead, good lead, and sale mean.
3. **Check recent changes.** Look for changes to budget, audience, ads, pages, and tracking.
4. **Follow sample leads.** Trace several people from the ad to the last known result.
5. **Compare like with like.** Use the same date range, location, service, and lead rules.
6. **Set a short repair window.** Fix known gaps, then review again on an agreed date.

Google explains how later lead results can be returned to the ad account in its [qualified and converted lead guidance](<https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/11459091?hl=en>) . That connection can improve the evidence, but it must be set up and tested.

## Use the work-and-records table

Good work, good records

Keep what works. Use the clear results to guide the next test.

Good work, weak records

Repair tracking and customer records before making a final provider decision.

Weak work, good records

Ask for a clear correction plan or prepare to change providers.

Weak work, weak records

Protect access and data, fix urgent tracking gaps, and plan a careful change.

This table does not make the decision for you. It keeps two different problems from being mixed together.

## Expect a plain and useful explanation

A marketing company should be able to explain:

- What goal the ads are set to reach
- What each reported conversion means
- What changed and why
- Which business results are known and which are missing
- What will be tested next and when it will be reviewed

Google's page about [conversion goals](<https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/10995103?hl=en-0>) explains how selected goals shape ad bidding and reports. The provider should be able to connect those settings to your real business goal without hiding behind tool language.

## Know when tracking is not the main problem

A tracking repair is not enough when:

- The business cannot get account, billing, or tracking access.
- The provider spends outside the agreed budget or scope.
- Search terms, audiences, or locations do not fit the business.
- Important errors stay open with no owner or date.
- Reports keep changing the subject when you ask about results.
- The provider makes claims that the evidence cannot support.

Those are work, trust, or control problems. Better tracking may reveal them, but it does not fix them.

## Choose the next move with the least waste

If the ad account needs better planning or management, review [paid marketing](<https://wavehello.ai/paid-advertising>) . If lead names, status, and sales are missing across your tools, review [business systems consulting](<https://wavehello.ai/business-systems-consulting>) .

You may choose to keep the provider, ask for a timed repair, reduce risk while testing, or change providers. Keep the business's account access, data, bills, and records safe during any change.

How this article was checked

WaveHello created this work-and-records review using current Google Ads help pages. It tests the provider's work and the quality of the records separately. It does not assume the provider is right or wrong before the review.
